A Legacy of Service: HCFR Foundation History (2013–Present)

Since its founding in 2013, the HCFR Foundation has supported Hillsborough County Fire Rescue personnel, their families, and the community. Guided by a mission of compassion and service, the Foundation has worked tirelessly to address the unique challenges faced by first responders and to enhance the safety and well-being of Hillsborough County residents.

The HCFR Foundation was established to fill critical gaps in support for firefighters and their families, especially during times of hardship. The vision was clear: providing meaningful assistance with dignity and respect while fostering a stronger connection between first responders and their community.

•  Introduced programs to provide immediate aid to firefighters and their families facing catastrophic events, such as line-of-duty deaths, cancer diagnoses, and other life-altering hardships.    
• Launched the first efforts to assist with mental health support, addressing the growing
• need for suicide prevention and resilience resources for first responders.
• Partnered with the American Red Cross for Project S.A.F.E. (Smoke Alarms for Everyone), installing free smoke alarms in underserved homes to reduce fire-related fatalities.

• Partnered with the Children’s Burn Foundation of Florida and attended a Burn Camp for children, offering healing and hope for young burn survivors.
• Funded public education initiatives, including fire and life safety demonstrations, to enhance awareness across all age groups.

• Established partnerships with the HCFR Peer Support Unit and Chaplaincy Program to provide critical mental and emotional health resources to firefighters and their families.
• Supported the Summer Youth Academy, helping inspire the next generation of firefighters through hands-on training and leadership development.

• Enhanced support for firefighters and their families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, offering financial assistance and resources during this unprecedented time.
• Worked with local businesses and nonprofits to expand community outreach and fundraising efforts, increasing the Foundation’s ability to assist those in need.

• Took the lead in planning and funding a memorial at the Public Safety Operations Complex (PSOC) Headquarters to honor line-of-duty deaths, ensuring the sacrifices of fallen heroes are never forgotten.
• Continued providing assistance in distributing Thanksgiving meals to firefighters on duty during the holiday season in partnership with the Mike Alstott Family Foundation.
• Increased investments in mental health initiatives, educational scholarships, and community engagement programs to meet evolving needs.

As the HCFR Foundation celebrates over a decade of service, its commitment remains unwavering. With ongoing support from generous donors, community partners, and dedicated volunteers, the Foundation will continue to stand by our firefighters, their families, and the residents of Hillsborough County.
